This Fall, 8 local long form teams will get their chance at big bucks doing long form improv. Adapted from the Village Theater’s “Atlanta Improv Battle,” The Spitfire Open brings the first improv tournament with cash prizes to downtown St. Pete, happening every Friday and Saturday night at 9pm through 2017. Teams will perform twice a month, collecting points from audience votes as they blaze their way to the Quarterfinals.
Full tournament rules are available online here, but here’s the short of it:
Long form improv teams of 4 or more will go head to head in hour long shows, getting 25-30 minutes each time they hit the stage. Playing every other week from September 1st through mid November 18th, they’ll try to get as many points as possible. Each 1st place vote gets 3 points, each 2nd place vote gets 1 point.
Starting on December 1st, the top 6 teams will break to the Quarterfinals in a last effort to get points and break to the Final Four. The top 4 teams in points will square off to determine who gets the grand prize!
Prizes are as follows:
1st Place - $1500
2nd Place - $750
3rd Place - $375
4th Place - $200
The Atlanta tournament drew an incredible amount of teams and even larger group of non-improvisers to watch and vote. With the final rounds happening at the Atlanta Improv Festival earlier this summer, scores of people poured into the theater on Decatur to watch their favorite teams go head to head for grand prizes. The final round showcased some of Atlanta’s best talent, including teams with players from the 5 different theaters in town. The final show featured a Shakespeare-inspired team, a game driven all female cast, and a hilarious Twilight Zone based “tipsy” show.
