We had a chance to talk to Orlando improviser Carolyn Fin, who's been part of Unscripted since we opened our doors. Here's her thoughts on what it's like to be part of a community 100 miles away from home base.
How did you get started doing improv? What's your story?
I found my way to try an improv class as an actor. I fell in love with it pretty much from day one. Not only do I love creating stories on the spot and discovering the characters and adventures within them, but I also love the tribe that surrounds improv. Improv teaches openness, listening, and outward focus, which naturally encourages a welcoming community that I feel more relaxed with to be myself.
What have you been involved with at Unscripted?
I've participated in the Maestro short form competition show, the Cagematch and Showcase with “Runaways,” and the Duo Show with “Carolyn and Nifer.”
You drive from Orlando to be part of our community in St. Pete. What do you usually do on the drive over? Also, are you crazy!? That’s a helluva drive.
Lots of podcasts, lots of music, and if I’m lucky to have a car companion lots of chatting! Haha, it is true - I-4 is the devil. Just means I get an extra podcast or two in.
What's your personal approach to improv?
I approach improv much like using the scientific method, with lots of curiosity, exploration, experimentation, and discovery. I attempt to follow what would be most joyful or what I want to discover more about and try to remain open to the truths my partner lays out and the ever changing path that we're going down together.
What sort of advice would you have for a new person who wants to be part of the Unscripted community?
Do it! It can be scary to try something new, I get it. In the words of Henry Miller “all growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without the benefit of experience.”
What do you hope for the future of the theater and the St. Pete improv scene?
To keep up all the great and inspiring work!
Westworld is my favorite improv show in the state!
You can see Carolyn play with her team The Runaways in Orlando at Deadly Sins Brewery, in St. Petersburg at Unscripted, and at festivals around the country.
