Children aren’t the only ones learning online right now. Comedy clubs like St. Petersburg’s Spitfire Theater are breaking new ground with introductory comedy classes offered online. Beginner students learn from Spitfire’s top comedy performers and writers once a week, building toward their final deliverable: a stand up routine, comedy sketch, song, or improvised monologue.

“We want to offer something for people who want, or need, to stay at home right now,” said Mary Brummet, main instructor for the online class. “We can all use a distraction and comedy is a great way to express yourself while having fun.”

Spitfire’s virtual comedy class is an overview of comedy as a craft for any and everyone. The class includes improv games, sketch, joke & lyrical writing lessons spread out across 6 weeks. In total, 6 different instructors will be featured as students narrow in on their comedic tastes and talents. Students who complete the course will be eligible for follow up online and in-person classes.

Spitfire’s comedy classes combine insights from all schools of thought in the improv and sketch comedy world, including The Second City, UCB, Groundlings, iO Theater, Hideout Theater and The Annoyance. Both online and offline, Spitfire’s signature training program is tailored to those interested in finding their voice through comedic performance and production.

With some of the top educators in the craft, new generations of students step on stage every weekend for public audiences. You can learn more and register for Spitfire’s virtual classes below.
